Masoud Pezeshkian, Iran’s president in 2025, promised during his election campaign to lift filtering and free up the internet. He stated in debates that if elected, he would change internet restrictions and address people’s problems.
However, in practice, his government faced serious challenges in lifting filtering. While it was expected that restrictions would be quickly removed, no progress was made and even internet speeds decreased further.
During the 12-day war between Iran and Israel, the country experienced a nationwide internet shutdown, and ongoing disruptions afterward harmed people and businesses. This situation highlighted a “class-based internet,” where free access to information became a government privilege.
Overall, Pezeshkian’s government performance on lifting filtering and freeing the internet did not match his campaign promises, and internet restrictions continue.
