The Supreme Council of Cyberspace is a state body in Iran, established by the order of Ali Khamenei, the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic. The president of Iran serves as the head of this council.
Reporters Without Borders has listed the council among the world’s cyber-repressive institutions. 
On January 12, 2018, the U.S. Department of the Treasury sanctioned the council for human rights violations, including censorship and restricting freedom of expression online. 
According to the U.S. Treasury’s statement, the council is responsible for blocking tens of thousands of websites belonging to international news media, government opposition, and social networks in Iran. 
The council is also described as the top policymaking body overseeing Iran’s efforts to disrupt the free flow of information on the internet.
